Glengarriff Woods Nature Reserve

The reserve runs to some 300 hectares on the Kenmare road out of Glengarriff, and the dominant habitat is old sessile oak woodland. The National Parks and Wildlife Service rates it at least as important as the Killarney oakwoods, and it forms part of the larger Glengarriff Harbour and Woodlands Special Area of Conservation. Areas cleared of non-native conifer over recent years are regenerating as young native woodland, so parts of it are a wood in the act of coming back.

The entrance sits about a kilometre from Glengarriff village. Free to walk.
