Tomnafinnoge Woods

Mature sessile oak stands between the villages of Shillelagh and Tinahely, with beech, Scots pine, holly and hazel filling in around it. This is what is left of the oak forest that once covered south Wicklow. Its timber was cut and shipped out for centuries, and the Irish Times has described what stands now as a sliver of what was there. The wood is a Special Area of Conservation.

Four waymarked walks run from the car park at Tomnafinnoge. The Hazel Walk loops 1.5km in about half an hour. The River Walk runs 2.9km along the bank of the Derry River, flat and buggy friendly. The Oak Walk covers 3.7km and the Beech Walk 3.6km with a bit more climb. Trail notes and GPX files are on Wicklow County Tourism.
