The Journal of Music
Entry: Free
Founded in 2000 as a bimonthly print magazine, The Journal of Music ran sixty print issues before moving online, and won the Utne Independent Press Award for Arts Coverage in 2010. It publishes independent criticism and commentary on music in Ireland across contemporary, traditional, classical, folk, jazz, opera and alternative music, and is supported by the Arts Council.
Alongside the writing it runs the country’s listings service: concerts and festivals on one board, and jobs, residencies, competitions and funding deadlines on another, with three newsletters a week. Anyone can add a listing. It is published by The Journal of Music in Ireland DAC from An Spidéal, Co. Galway, and it is free to read.
It is the one place the whole Irish music sector meets: an ensemble in Dublin, a composer in Cork and a librarian programming a concert all read the same board. For a musician, the opportunities page is the most current funding calendar in the country.
