Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic

Alison Bechdel · 2006 · Houghton Mifflin

The Bechdel family ran the town funeral home, which the children nicknamed the Fun Home. Alison’s father was a high-school English teacher with a hidden life, and her own coming out as a lesbian arrived not long before his death. She builds the memoir from letters, diaries and the books they both read, circling the same events until they give up their meaning. It later became a Broadway musical that won the 2015 Tony Award for Best Musical.
